Menominee River, Niagara, WICaption:Date: 2004-07-25 12.52.04 Occasion: Summer Vacation Location: Subject: Exposure: Automatic Res: 800x600 Notes: Menominee is Algonquin for "wild-rice people." The Menominee River forms part of the state boundary between upper Michigan and Wisconsin. It gives its name to the iron range where Iron Mountain, MI, is located and to the city and county in the Upper Peninsula. The river is not anywhere near and ought not to be confused with the Menominee Indian Reservation on the Wolf River in Menominee County, WI, the city of Menomonee Falls on the Menomonee River in Waukesha County, WI, or the city of Menomonie on Lake Menomin on the Red Cedar River in Dunn County, WI. Statue: Nee-Gaw-Nee-Gaw-Bow, Wakefield, MICaption: Leading ManDate: 2004-07-25 18.13.48 Occasion: Summer Vacation Location: Sunday Lake Subject: Exposure: Brightened with Gimp Res: 1600x1200 Notes: Statue by Hungarian sculptor and writer Peter "Wolf" Toth honors the Chippewa Indians. It is the 59th statue on the "Trail of Whispering Giants." Peter Toth has donated a different Indian carving to each of the 50 states and Canada. It is located on the southern shore of Sunday Lake next to the Wakefield Visitor's Center. The statue was carved from one piece of pine donated by the Ottawa National Forest and was completed in 1988. http://www.ironwoodmi.org/attracti.htm I passed the evening pleasantly in the city campground (showers included) on the opposite shore. It has been independently confirmed that "Leading Man" bears a striking resemblance to Peter O'Toole in his role as King Priam in the 2004 blockbuster movie TROY. Provenance: Original Keywords: |
